GLOSSARY OF WATER PURIFICATION AND HEALTH TERMS.
This Glossary is not meant to be all-encompassing but instead contains terms used in the different forms of purification and separation.
geyser |
a geothermal feature of the Earth where there is an opening in the surface that contains superheated water that periodically erupts in a shower of water and steam.

Giardia |
A parasite found in water. Very detrimental to the digestive system, causing diarrhea and cramps.

glacier |
a huge mass of ice, formed on land by the compaction and recrystallization of snow, that moves very slowly downslope or outward due to its own weight.

glassing |
A form for silica scaling at high temperatures, usually in highpressure boilers or stills.

GRAS |
Materials “Generally Regarded As Safe,” as listed by the FDA.

greywater |
wastewater from clothes washing machines, showers, bathtubs, hand washing, lavatories and sinks.

ground water |
(1) water that flows or seeps downward and saturates soil or rock, supplying springs and wells. The upper surface of the saturate zone is called the water table.
(2) Water stored underground in rock crevices and in the pores of geologic materials that make up the Earth's crust.
